Hi,
The 104/2 mid-range drivers sound distorted at higher volume. What options are available to replace them? Could the crossover caused the distortion instead of the speaker units?

It never hurts to ask the obvious ... so...are you sure the amplifier is not clipping? |

Thanks for response. If only one side of the midrange gives the cracking sound, clipping should not be the issue. |

Depends on the programme material, unless you’re listening in mono.
… or did you mean top and bottom on one side?
Bitd it was always clipping - unless it was the cartridge mistracking… |

I was listening stereo. The cracking sound came from one side. |

Cracking definitely sounds like the amplifier is limiting in some way. Current limiting sounds worse than voltage (clipping) limiting.
Have you got an oscilloscope which would let you look at the left and right amplifier outputs?
...and are you capable of recognising amplifier clipping if you saw it? |

No, I don't have it. I am pretty sure the cracking sound cam from the speaker. I wonder if after market speaker could fit the 104/2. |

Of course the sound came from the speaker!! Where else could it come from? The speaker is reproducing whatever the amplifier sends it.
You need to find a local audio engineer. |

Swap the speakers - if the cracking is still on the same side then both speakers are fine, if it follows the speaker then a fault with that speaker? |
