They do come up from time to time, just be patient. SP1039 is the exact model you want.

If you find an SP1039 bass unit for sale look for the little white spot in the middle of the dustcap on the centre of the unit.
This indicates the improved higher temperature aluminium and nomex voice coil former, so the unit will handle higher power and be less prone to failure.

I bought my first RR104's back in 1978, they had that white spot in the middle of the dustcap of the B200's .. I traded them in 1984 for a pair 104/2's

2 years ago I bought a set RR104ab's, but these pair does not have the white spots. Now i know what these white spots means . thanks!

This is the first time I've heard this. Where did you get the info?

I'm sitting here now with a pair of original 104aB's SN's 54585/54582 , manufacture date unknown. No white spots on the B-200's
Also here are a pair of original 104's (Not aB's.) SN's 31329 and 31331. Older models I'm sure. But THEY sport white dotted B-200's.

Were there any electrical differences between them?

I doubt very much there are any differences apart from heat dissipation issues, if I remember correctly, the 104 was rated as 50W, the 104aB rated at 100W. This would suggest the coil former upgrade allowed this to take place, and the T27 was then additionally protected by the addition of the crossover panel fuse.

Why your units appear to be the wrong way round, who knows? Maybe the 1039s have been swapped out at some time, or someone at the factory ran out of white paint or mislaid their brush that day? Smile

Curiouser and Curiouser.
Since the aB's are absolutely going to be my "keeper set", I'm going to do a scan of all 4 and use the data to make a decision on swapping back and forth Very Happy

I would love to know more about this B-200 upgrade. It's the first I've heard of it.
Especially I'd like to know when the change was made, what version of speaker system was it designed for, and how all that ties into the 104 development.
I HAVE seen white dotted B-200 dust-cap's. But only have I seen a few 104aB's with it.
The info in this thread is quite confusing, since I know for certain the both my 104aB's and my earlier 104's are 100% original. Never have they been modified (other than some clown swapped a 4.2uF tweeter cap in the base 104's for a 4uF MALLORY cap that measured a full 4.8uF). The drivers though are untouched. It's very obvious.

Upload the photo into any hosting site like google photos etc and mark it public, then copy the link. You can check the link by pasting into a blank browser and see if the picture comes up. Then in the post or reply here click the IMG box at the top and paste the link from the photo.

Thanks for the lesson in photo sharing. It's a bit complex and time consuming to set up, but I think I've managed.
Posting photos here now of ancient 104's (in very rough cosmetic condition), and early 104aB's well cared for.
The 104's have what I'm certain to be original B-200's with white dotted dust caps. The 104aB's are Plain Jane.
Can anyone confirm that these are indeed different internally?
